A Foggy View of Nothing

Writer: Krista Krista

Our first excursion outside of the big city was to Volcan Poas. It was relaxing to get out the city and finally see houses in the countryside that didn’t resemble Alcatraz in security. As we climbed higher and higher in altitude, the air became cooler and the fog rolled in. When we arrived at the volcano park, the guard at the gate said we would be unable to see the volcano today because of the cloudy weather. Actually, it turns out you can only see the crater about 50 days out of the year because of weather, but we didn’t know this before we left on the 2 hour excursion.

This was our view of the glorious volcano.

(I’m not kidding, this is a real picture of what we saw!)

We channeled our disappointment into an invigorating hike through the trails in the park and were working up quite a sweat when we noticed some of the leaves in the dense forest were glistening with sunlight!

“That’s because I prayed we would get to see the volcano!” I shouted.

Knowing that it may be a short-lived opportunity, we kicked it into high gear, even though we were already breathing hard with the extra altitude and did the best we could to run (OK, Joel ran and I volunteered to be the pack mule with his camera and bring up the rear!) back to the volcano.

The clouds had not only parted, but rolled away completely, giving us an unobstructed view of the crater!

But only for a few minutes, and then the whole place returned to a foggy view of nothing.
